Level 1 Coaching Children & Young People in Sport
For assistant instructors, instructors, junior instructors and all those wishing to coach children and young people in sport
Duration: ½ day (3-4 hours)
Description
This course helps to identify some of the differences between children and adults, the elements for warm-up and safe techniques for children in sport, and how to develop safe and effective coaching sessions for children. It identifies good coaching practice, types of learning difficulties in children, strategies for dealing with them, helps you to assess your own communication skills with children, and also how to build and maintain good relationships.
Aims
- To provide coaches working with children in sport with the basic principles of good practice and child development.
- The course qualifies the coach to act as an assistant to a more qualified coach teaching children and young people in sport.
The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Sports aims to develop a coach’s ‘How to coach’ skills as well as improve their ‘what to coach’ skills.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:
Theory
- Explain the development of children within sport.
- Identify the differences between children and adults.
- Describe the elements for warm-up and safe techniques for children in sport.
- Develop safe and effective coaching sessions for children.
- Identify good coaching practice.
- Identify types of learning difficulties in children and strategies for dealing with them.
- Assess their own communication skills with children and action plan to increase their effectiveness.
- Identify how to build and maintain good relationships.
Practical
- Demonstrate coaching a warm-up for children, exercise or game.
- Demonstrate the coaching a training technique for children.
- Produce an assessment of their coaching & communication skills with children and an action plan for future development.
Level 3 Coaching Children & Young People in Sport
For heads of clubs or associations and those wishing to implement their own club junior coaching programme when combined with the Level 3 Child Protection course.
Duration: 1 day (6 hours)
Aims
- To provide coaches working with children in sport with the basic principles of good practice and child development.
- To protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and implementing good coaching practice.
- To provide the coach with knowledge to be able to teach the Level 1 children and young people’s coaching course within their own club, or with a TSP/PTLLS to any club.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:
Theory
- Explain the development of children within sport.
- Identify the differences between children and adults.
- Describe the elements for warm-up and safe techniques for children in sport.
- Develop safe and effective coaching sessions for children.
- Identify types of learning difficulties in children and strategies for dealing with them.
- Assess their own communication skills with children and action plan to increase their effectiveness.
- Identify how to build and maintain good relationships.
- Identify coaching practice and sport situations that might constitute poor practice and/or abuse.
- Recognise key principles of code of conduct and their application to good coaching practice.
Practical
- Produce a lesson/session plan
- Demonstrate teaching a short session for children (minimum 20-30mins, including warm up & training from the session plan).
- Produce an assessment of their coaching & communication skills with children and an action plan for future development.
- Produce a programme of training (scheme of work/rotational lessons) for one of your children’s classes and provide the rational for its order.
