Level 1 Child Protection Awareness Course
For assistant instructors, instructors, staff and volunteers coming into contact with children.
Duration: 1.5 hours
Aims
- To learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns.
- To support staff in demonstrating their personal responsibility in their conduct towards the safeguarding of children.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:
Theory
- Recognise truths and myths surrounding child abuse.
- Identify ways of dealing with their own feelings about child abuse.
- Describe what constitutes abuse and identify the indicators.
- Recognise signs and symptoms.
- Identify appropriate action if a child discloses he/she has been abused.
- Identify appropriate action if concerned about the behaviour of another coach or colleague.
- Identify appropriate action if concerned about the behaviour of a parent/carer.
Level 3 Child Protection: Certificate in Child Protection
For heads of clubs or associations, child protection officers, or those wishing to implement their own Child Protection Awareness course.
Duration: 3 hours
Aims
- To expand on the Level 1 awareness of child abuse and how to handle situations of concern.
- To cover the requirements of a Child Protection Policy and how to create a safer environment for children.
- Also to help club/association heads to complete the NSPCC Child Protection support unit’s Policy Standard criteria.

- Describe what is ‘Harm’ as defined in the Children Act 1989.
- List the main requirements of a Child Protection Policy.
- Identify the requirements of the CPSU’s policy standards and how they will work towards achieving them.
