Level 1 Coaching Adults in Sports

For assistant instructors and new instructors

Duration: ½ day (3 hours)

Description

Clearly defines coaching and introduces the basic components of coaching sessions. Including sections on the roles, responsibilities and qualities of a coach, it is an ideal introduction for new and existing coaches. The emphasis is to outline safe and ethical coaching practice with specific focus on the Code of Conduct for Sports Coaches.

Aims

  • The course provides coaches with an introduction to the principles and practice of safe, ethical and effective coaching of players of all ages.
  • The course qualifies the coach to act as an assistant to a more qualified coach.
  • The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Sports aims to develop a coach’s ‘How to Coach’ skills as well as improve their ‘What to coach skills’.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:

Theory

  • Describe the learning and coaching process.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of a coach.
  • Describe the competencies of a coach.
  • Identify good coaching practice.
  • Identify and explain own coaching style.
  • Assess their own communication skills and action plan to increase their effectiveness.
  • Identify how to build and maintain good relationships.

Practical

  • Demonstrate coaching a warm-up technique.
  • Demonstrate the coaching a training technique.
  • Produce a self assessment of their coaching & communication skills and an action plan for their own further development.

Level 2 Coaching Adults in Sports

For club instructors

Duration: 1 Day (6 hours)

Aims

  • Building on the Level 1 Certificate the course develops greater depth of knowledge of the sports coaching and the principles and practice of safe, ethical coaching of players of all ages.
  • The course qualifies the coach to ‘prepare for, deliver and review coaching session(s)’.

Description

The course provides practical tips to help develop coaching skills and allow participants to get the most benefit from your sessions. Also it includes sections on planning, organising and delivering sessions. Featuring everything you need to be an effective coach, the emphasis is on detailing the fundamental components of the coaching process – to Plan, Deliver and Evaluate.

Objectives  

By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:

Theory

  • Construct the planning, preparation and evaluating of coaching sessions.
  • Identify the factors required in running effective training sessions.
  • Identify requirements for going to competitions and events with participants.
  • Describe effective methods of giving feedback on performance.
  • Describe how we can monitor the physical and mental condition of participants.
  • Identify appropriate information to plan coaching sessions.
  • Identify techniques to develop participants’ performance.
  • Identify what is required to provide safe and effective coaching sessions.
  • Identify what is required to establish a safe environment for coaching.

Practical

  • Produce a lesson/session plan.
  • Demonstrate teaching a short session (warm up & training technique from the session plan).
  • Produce a self evaluation of current their current teaching/coaching sessions and an action plan for implementation of improvements.

Level 3 Coaching Adults in Sports

For heads of clubs or associations (those wishing to implement their own club/organisation coaching programme).

Duration: 2 days (12 hours)

Aims

  • To provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in sports with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to deliver a coaching programme and demonstrate their coaching ability.
  • The Level 3 courses offer an opportunity for candidates to learn how to effectively apply the principles of performance profiling, goal setting and designing, planning and evaluating a training programme and practice.
  • It also aims to enable the candidate to create an effective coaching environment, establish supportive working relationships and manage the behaviour of players and others. This is achieved through an understanding and the application of the underpinning knowledge of the Level 2 Coaching, plus expanding on areas of teaching and instruction.

Completing this course enables the Level 3 coach to teach the Level 1 & Level 2 courses within their own sports club/organisation (or with a Level 3 TSP/PTLLS deliver open courses on behalf of Affiniti Training).

  • Describe how different resources can be utilised in teaching.
  • Describe the need for the training to meet the learner’s needs and learning styles.

Practical

  • Produce a lesson/session plan.
  • Demonstrate teaching a short session (minimum 20-30mins, including warm up & training from the session plan).
  • Produce a written report on one of your lessons, describing the varied teaching styles and resources you use to meet the learners needs.
  • Produce a programme of training (scheme of work/rotational lessons) for one of your adult classes and provide the rational for its order.
  • Produce a self evaluation of your teaching & coaching program and produce an action plan for the implementation of your suggested improvements.​
