Disability in Sport Courses

Level 1 Coaching Performers with a Disability in Sport

For assistant instructors, instructors, junior instructors, and all those wishing to coach students with disabilities in sport.

Duration: 3 hours

Aims

  • Develop your own coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled players through inclusive and separate coaching sessions.
  • Discover new ways to adapt training and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your students’ needs.

This workshop answers some of the frequently asked questions posed by sports teachers, coaches and participants about how to work with disabled sports people. This includes ideas for inclusion, the course will introduce and offer guidance to any coach involved with disabled people in sport, the emphasis being to introduce coaches to inclusion and effective practice.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:

Theory

  • Identify the key points of the protection of vulnerable adults.
  • Identify why disabled people are important.
  • Explain when integration and segregation might be most appropriate.
  • Determine how to include disabled people in sport.
  • Select appropriate coaching activities.
  • Identify appropriate safety and medical considerations.
  • Review their own knowledge of how to adapt their coaching to the specific needs of sportsmen/women with a disability.

Practical

  • Produce a programme design and monitoring process for a disabled student taking part in your sport.

Level 3 Structuring Lessons for Performers with Disability in Sport & Safety and the Law

For heads of clubs or associations, Equality & Diversity/Disability officers and those wishing to implement their own Equality & Diversity or Disability Awareness course.

Duration: 6 hours

Aims

  • To expand on the Level 1 Disability in Sports and how to handle situations of concern.
  • To cover the requirements of a Disability Awareness Policy and how to create a safer environment for sportsmen and women.
  • To give further information on the protection of vulnerable adults and the requirements of Disability Discrimination (as part of the Equality Act 2005).

This Level 3 course will allow heads of clubs/associations or their Equality & Diversity/Disability officers to teach the Level 1 Disability in Sport course and therefore implement their own Equality & Diversity or Disability Awareness training in house.

Objectives          

By the end of this workshop coaches will have knowledge of:

Theory

  • Create effective coaching environments.
  • Disability and Law – Implications of the Equality Act 2005.
  • Students with disabilities – the do’s and don’ts.
  • The requirements of a Equality & Diversity or Disability Policy for the protection of vulnerable adults.

Practical

  • Produce a programme design and monitoring process for a disabled student taking part in your sport.
  • Produce an Equality & Diversity/Disability Policy.
